The Problem with Log Cabins

Why Log Cabins Get Damp, Cold & Mouldy

Log cabins and timber garden buildings are notorious for condensation. Timber walls have low thermal mass — they cool down rapidly overnight and in cold weather, bringing wall surface temperatures below the dew point. Moisture in the air then condenses onto the walls, leading to damp, mould, and timber decay.

Traditional insulation boards are difficult to retrofit in log cabins — they consume floor area, require battening, and can trap moisture behind impermeable membranes, accelerating rot in timber walls.

VIPEQ cork spray is applied directly to the internal timber surface in a 3–5 mm coat. It raises the wall's surface temperature above the dew point, preventing condensation — while remaining fully vapour-permeable so the timber can breathe naturally.

The Key Difference

Unlike foam spray or rigid boards, cork is naturally breathable (vapour-permeable Class W1). This is critical in timber buildings — trapping moisture behind impermeable insulation causes rot. Cork lets moisture vapour pass through, protecting the timber structure long-term.

Benefits for Log Cabins

Stops condensation forming on cold timber walls
Prevents black spot mould inside log cabins
Fully vapour-permeable — timber can still breathe
No rigid boards — conforms to curved and uneven logs
Applied in 3–6 mm — no significant space loss
Zero VOC — safe for sleeping cabins and garden rooms
Adds acoustic insulation — reduces external noise
Naturally fire retardant cork material
Works in cabins used year-round or seasonally
Compatible with painted, varnished, and bare timber

Not Suitable For

Active water ingress or leaking roof — fix first
Cabins with severe structural rot — repair prior to application
Externally — use VIPEQ Thermal Corkspray spray system instead
