Cold stores and cold rooms operate at low internal temperatures, creating a steep temperature differential between the cold internal environment and the warmer surrounding structure. Wherever insulation is interrupted — at concrete columns, steelwork, door frames, junctions and penetrations — a thermal bridge allows heat to flow in and cold to leak out, creating localised cold surfaces.
These cold surfaces condense moisture from the surrounding air, producing condensation, frost and ice that can damage stock, create slip hazards and compromise the thermal performance of the cold store. Thermal bridging is one of the most common and costly problems in temperature-controlled buildings.
